Fort Abercrombie Virtual Tour

Welcome to Fort Abercrombie State Historic Park.  We are standing on the grounds of the State Historical Society's Museum at Abercrombie ND facing east. The fort grounds proper are approximately one quarter mile to the east of us at this point in time.

Before we begin our tour, it is important for you to note that the fort depicted here by most of the signage and reconstruction is the fort at it's largest extreme, that is the fort as it appeared in the early 1870's.   As a matter of fact, the first Fort Abercrombie that was built in 1858 is not on this site.  It was nearby, but spring flooding caused the buildings to be moved to the present higher site in 1860

The State Historical Society of North Dakota has recently completed the reconstruction and "ghosting" of the stockade.  Research indicated that the stockade was 8 to 10 feet high, so that is the height of the newly reconstructed/ghosted stockade.  The "ghosting" of the stockade expands the modern interpretation of Fort Abercrombie's history, by allowing the thought that the stockade is either under construction or is in the process of being removed by the military (in accordance with the site's history).
